Not going to lie, it feels a little strange to be going back to “business as usual” when there is so much turmoil and so much work to be done. I’m posting more about my thoughts on the world’s state of affairs on Falon Loves Life, but I will definitely be blogging here about some of the books I am reading to further educate myself. And, as always, I will continue to make an effort to support Black authors and share their stories. And if you are anything like me, you are relying on books more than ever to do everything from educate and uplift to distract and escape. So long as that remains the case, I’ll continue to share my thoughts. Here’s what I read in May:
Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas: Even though I read the rest of the Throne of Glass series, I never picked this one up because Chaol isn’t my favorite; he’s still not, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet: I really wanted to love this one, but it was a solid like (don’t know that I will go out of my way to finish the series though). Full review here.
An Heiress to Remember by Maya Rodale: Gilded Age romance, that’s all I gotta say. Full review here.
Protect the Prince by Jennifer Estep: Glad I finally got to see a kiss! Full review here.
The Bet by Rachel VanDyken: I thought this plot was weirdly illogical and the writing mediocre at best.
Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole: I love all these books, but the Lykae are probably my fave.
Rebel by Marie Lu: This soothed the sting of the lack of an HEA with the original Legend trilogy, definitely recommend if you are a fan of the first three books. Full review here.
Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell: Her voice is unmatched and I freakin’ love these books. Full review here.
Marriage Contract by Katee Robert: If this book had been by any other author, I probably would have DNFed because I did not love the mob stuff, but it’s Katee and it was hot so I read it and it was fine.
Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover by Sarah MacLean: In a rare occurrence for a Sarah MacLean book, I didn’t love this hero *shrug emoji*.
All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover: Lots of tough subjects in this one, but such a great story. Full review (and content warnings) here.
Tout Sweet by Karen Wheeler: Maybe not the best time to read a memoir about ditching life and moving to a tiny French village, but it was a nice escape.
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas: So. many. mixed. feelings. Full review here.
Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai: I love Alisha and I loved this book. Full review here.
Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole: This one was a like but not a love (I find myself leaning toward the later in the series books).
She’s Faking It by Kristin Rockaway: I had some issues with how the social media stuff was dealt with in this book, which made it hard for me to love it.
DNF: Lover Revealed by JR Ward–Nothing against the series, I just couldn’t handle Butch and his label dropping at the moment I picked it up; Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater–I don’t know what happened with this since I really liked the first one, but it just didn’t click for me.
And as I compile this list, I realize I super sucked at reading books by Black authors last month and I need to do better. What were your favorite reads from last month?
