Like all card-carrying members of Romancelandia, I have been anxiously awaiting the release of The Lost City ever since I saw the first trailer, hoping and praying it did the romance genre justice. I finally got to see it last week, and I’m happy to report it was everything I wanted and more.
The Lost City is about romance author Loretta (Sandra Bullock), who has recently lost her husband and is having trouble getting back in the groove of writing and promoting her books. Her series is based on real archeological finds, which is something she and her husband did together. While on a book tour with her cover model Allen (Channing Tatum), Loretta is kidnapped by an evil billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who is looking for the actual burial site mentioned in her latest book. He takes her to the island and forces her to translate ancient ruins that will lead him to buried treasure. When Allen comes along to rescue her–to prove he is more than just a cover model–a comedy of errors ensues as the two try to find their way off the island and to safety. Helped along by Loretta’s publisher (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and a mysterious spy Allen met one time (Brad Pitt), they manage to save the day and live happily ever after.
I loved every single second of this movie. I laughed my ass off (and speaking of asses, we get a very nice shot of Channing’s), not just to all the jokes everyone found funny, but to so many little insider romance and writer tidbits. If you loved Romancing the Stone, you’ll probably love this one too. I thought all of the performances were fantastic, but Daniel as the evil billionaire was perfection. Sandra and Channing also had perfect chemistry (there is one dance scene that was super hot), and Channing plays the himbo so well, I’m sure he will be inspiring many romance heroes of the future. I wish we would have gotten a little more time with them as a couple, and I really wish we could start seeing some sexy times in our rom-coms, but overall, I had very little to complain about here. It was a joyful movie from start to finish and I can’t wait to watch it again!
