Movie Minis

Hi friends! If you have known me for a while now, or caught any blog posts from my olden days of blogging, you know how much I love the movies. In the before times, I went to at least one movie a week and it was definitely one of my happy places. Since getting vaccinated, my movie going has been on and off. My first movie back in the theater post shot was Monday starring Sebastian Stan (for obvious reasons) and since then, I’ve ventured out to see some of the major hits (Eternals and Spider-Man, obvs), but haven’t really gotten back in my once a week swing. And of course, COVID surges mean I take it week by week. But now that we are in a lull and my kid is also vaxxed, I plan on catching as many movies in the theater as I can. I saw three in February and I wanted to share my thoughts! I don’t know that this will become another monthly post (I have enough of those already!), but I’ll probably post some occasional thoughts when I’ve seen some things I have *opinions* on.

The 355: Okay, so yes, a majority of the movies I’ve gone to see have featured either Sebastian Stan or Richard Madden. I make no apologies for having a type! However, Seb is not the star of this one. The 355 is about a group of women who at one point worked for the CIAish programs in their countries. They team up (some on a mission from their government, some going rogue) to stop the sale of a device that could destroy the world and kick some ass while looking fabulous. Jessica Chastain plays the main character, and she’s joined by Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, and Bingbing Fan. I loved it and now want to write a series of romances about a kickass lady spy gang.

Marry Me: I am still holding out a bit of hope that 2022 will be the year of the rom-com resurgence, and despite some faults (like casting), I think Marry Me was a good way to kick it off. JLo is fabulous, of course, the songs were catchy, and the storyline was cute. Yes Owen Wilson completely phoned it in, but I think that is to be expected of Owen Wilson? So yeah, I mostly blame casting for this one. However, even with his lackluster performance, the movie was still a ton of fun to watch. It could have been better, but it also could have been a lot worse.

West Side Story: Oh my do I have thoughts on this one. First and foremost, I wish they would have recast Ansel What’s His Face when it came out that he was preying on underage girls. It was really tough for me to not scrunch up my face in disgust every time he was on screen which made it hard to watch the movie. Also, all that aside, he’s not great as a performer. His singing is fine, but overall he’s totally bland and brings nothing to the role. By far the highlights of this movie are Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler. They are both fantastic, totally stole the show, and turned in beautiful performances. Brian d’Arcy James was completely wasted as Officer Krupke–seriously what is the point of having him in your musical in a non-singing role?!?!? That’s not a knock on him, he’s great, it just seemed like a wasted opportunity. And overall, I really just didn’t get why the movie needed to be remade when not much changed? I feel like if you are going to remake an iconic film, you need to bring something new to the table. And while there were moments of added layers, it wasn’t enough for me to feel like it was worth it. This one was a let down (and not worthy of a Best Picture nom, like at all).

Some hits and some misses here, but overall, not mad about it because it means I get to be back at the movies!
