I mean, is there really anything more to say? Yes, yes there is. ***SPOILERS AHEAD***
Okay, so I have now seen Eternals twice. I managed to score a ticket to an early screening so I saw it before opening and then I went again last week. First and foremost, during my first viewing (two hour and forty minute viewing, btw), I did not get up once to use the bathroom. If you know me, you know how big of a deal that is. But, as usual, I have lots of thoughts!
Let’s start with the good, which is most of it! This movie is stunning. Like frame by frame, I thought the whole thing was shot beautifully. Of course, there’s also a cast of gorgeous actors, so that obviously didn’t hurt. The costumes are fantastic, I love that the final scene happens in daylight so you can actually see what’s going on. Angelina Jolie is a stunning woman and this might be the best she has ever looked, like it was unreal levels of gorgeous. Overall, I was really into the look of the film.
I also think I laughed harder in this movie than I have in most (any?) other MCU films. Kumail Nanjiani, of course, is hilarious, but there are also a lot of quiet humor moments that I really loved. And what is great about the humor is that it held up the second time around. It was still funny even after I’d already heard all the jokes.
One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about the film is not getting to spend enough time with each individual character, which I sort of agree with. I do think you have to know going in as an audience member that this is not going to feel like Avengers. By the time we got Avengers, we already knew all these characters so we had a connection to them going in. It’s not realistic to feel that way about ten brand new characters the first time we meet them. But what I think is great about this movie is it sets up so many possibilities for the future. There are countless Disney+ shows that could be developed in addition to the continuation of the story in movie format. And honestly, director Chloe Zhao did a phenomenal job managing this large cast who most of us had no background knowledge of. Even with the limited time, I still walked way feeling like I knew the heart of each of these characters, and looking forward to getting to know them more. Also, so much potential for love stories in this group, give them all to me please and thank you!
For me, the hardest part about this movie is a totally personal beef (serious spoilers coming right now). I was so excited to see my main man, Richard Madden, take on the role of an MCU hero. Only to find out he’s the villain?!?!?! And now he’s dead?!?!?!?! ***SOB*** How could you do that to me MCU? The betrayal is real. Though I am most definitely holding out for a “Somehow Ikaris returned” moment in future projects. I will suspend the disbelief (also the man is practically a god so def feel like he could survive). I did find a hint of humor in the Game of Thrones parallel. After watching the first few seasons of GoT we’re all thinking Robb Stark is the hero and then turns out to be Jon Snow (until the destruction of character arcs that was season eight, but that’s a whole other story). Based on the trailers for Eternals, seemed like Ikaris was going to be the hero and Dane was going to be the throwaway and once again, Kit Harrington seems to have scored the major role here! Good for you Kit! But seriously, please give me more Richard.
Overall, I really liked this new branch of the MCU. It’s definitely different. It doesn’t feel like anything else we’ve gotten from the MCU before. But that’s not a bad thing. There is so much room for content now, especially with Disney+ it’s like give me all of it please. If one branch isn’t for you, go find one that is. I really fell in love with this world and these characters and I for one, can’t wait to see more. And please give me all the female directors, thanks so much.
