Trope(s): relationship in trouble; enemies to lovers

Aaaannnnddd we’re back with another book that I loved so much it made me feel bad about myself as a writer!!! Woohoo! Seriously though, this book is masterfully done and I can only hope to ever one day write something this good. For reals.

Naomi and Nick are engaged. Unfortunately, they also hate each other. Kind of a problem when you’re about to tie the knot, I think we can all agree. After a whirlwind courtship, the two are now planning a huge elaborate wedding that neither of them really wants. Nick’s mother, however, is determined to give her son the best wedding ever, especially since she’s convinced her future daughter in law is nowhere near good enough for her perfect baby boy. Naomi resents Nick’s devotion to his mother, Nick resents Naomi for fading to the background and not fighting for their relationship. They both want out of the wedding, but neither is brave enough to call it off. So begins their battle to push the other to the brink. Nick and Naomi each begin to prank each other, escalating to some truly terrible acts, all in the name of goading the other into cancelling the wedding. In the end, their battle of wits leads them back to each other, and they live happily ever after.

Three chapters into this book, I was convinced I was going to hate it. In the beginning, it seems pretty clear that Naomi is justified in her resentment of Nick, and I really didn’t see how he was going to be able to recover from some of the things he said and did. But Sarah is a master storyteller, and despite those initial feelings of oof no coming back from that, Nick turned out to be one of my favorite heroes. Sarah’s voice and her undeniable wit made me laugh out loud multiple times, and there were just as many moments that made my heart squish with all kinds of lovey feelings. It takes a really talented writer to take a story that shouldn’t work and make it unforgettable, and that’s exactly what this book is. It is perfection and I loved every second of it!

Overall Rating: 5 stars!
