Title: Written in the Stars
Author: Alexandria Bellefleur
Sub-genre: Contemporary
Trope(s): Enemies to lovers; fake dating
I’m such a sucker for a good fake dating trope, and this one does it extremely well.
Darcy is an uptight, type A numbers person who recently moved across the country to escape a bad breakup and be closer to her brother. Elle is an astrologist who is constantly being shamed by her family for not having a “real” job, despite landing a book deal and a partnership with a major dating app. Darcy’s brother, the creator of the app, sets Elle and Darcy up on a blind date and it does not go well. But when her brother is pestering her to go on more dates, Darcy lies and says she and Elle really hit it off so he’ll leave her alone. Darcy and Elle come up with an arrangement: Elle will go with Darcy to her brother’s Christmas party and Darcy will accompany Elle home for family Thanksgiving. Of course, the more and more time they spend together, the closer Elle and Darcy become. But both have some deeper issues to handle within themselves before they can truly be ready to be there for each other. Luckily, this is a romance y’all, and they figure it out and live happily ever after.
Honestly, this book was just a delight, pure and simple. It was everything I want in a romance: enough issues for the tension to feel real, but so much heart and love and tenderness to make my heart feel all warm and squishy. I loved both of these characters, though Elle was probably my favorite because she is so creative and fun. I liked seeing her deal with her more “traditional” family members as she finally got them to accept her less than traditional career path. Darcy and Elle share some really fantastic (and some really hot) moments together, and I just really enjoyed how they came together in the end. I am looking forward to Darcy’s brother’s book because I loved Alexandria’s witty voice, I think she is going to become one of my auto buys!
