Title: This Time Next Year
Author: Sophie Cousens
Sub-genre: Contemporary/Women’s Fiction
Content Warning: side character experiences child loss off page, in the past
The other day I was in desperate need of a little brain break. This book was not part of my original TBR for this month, but it seemed like the perfect distraction read and it definitely was.
Minnie Cooper (yes that’s her real name) has been told her whole life how she is cursed. Born in the first minutes of January 1st, Minnie’s parents came thisclose to winning the first baby of the decade prize, which included a sizable amount of money. Not only did they not win the contest, but the woman who did stole what was supposed to be Minnie’s name. So instead of being named Quinn, she was saddled with the moniker Minnie Cooper. Minnie grows up hearing about the infamous baby Quinn who stole her name and prize money, but it isn’t until much later in life that she meets him. Minnie and Quinn’s run in leads to more and more run ins, and while we experience their present time meet ups, we are also revealed little snippets of the past that show us just how many times Minnie and Quinn crossed paths. Eventually the two realize their feelings are more than just acquaintances, or even friends, but both have some emotional things to get in order before they can make it work. In a lifetime of missed opportunities, Minnie and Quinn have to finally get the timing just right. (Don’t worry, there’s an HEA.)
This book was just what I needed in the moment. It was funny and clever and had just the right amount of heart. I think the most fun part for me as a reader was seeing the whole picture come together as I read, seeing just how many times Minnie and Quinn were in the same place at the same time and never knew it. It was a lot of fun to piece those little nuggets together. I also just found Minnie to be super relatable, as she goes through job struggles and money struggles and life struggles. Overall, it was just a completely satisfying and enjoyable read.
