So full disclosh right off the bat, Suzanne was one of my Pitch Wars mentors, so clearly I’m supes biased. But please don’t let that color your decision to buy this book (unless it makes you want to run out and buy this book, then you should totally go ahead with that instinct) because I wouldn’t write this review if I didn’t believe everything I say!

Nate works at a zombie themed escape room, and when he meets the company’s newest employee Kate, he’s immediately smitten. In addition to all the normal teenage boy worries, Nate also has the responsibility of taking care of his five year old sister, and worrying about his family’s finances. The guy is busting his butt to get good grades, work and save money, and help take care of his family. Kate is still struggling from the death of her mother, which is definitely not helped by her relationship with her father, who is cold and neglectful, spending all of his time at work, a high tech robotics company. Kate dreams of moving to New York to pursue a career in theater (yeah girl!), but her father sees it as a frivolous dream and refuses to support it. So when Kate sees an announcement for a survival competition with a $50,000 prize, she jumps at the chance. She recruits Nate to be her partner since the competition is right up his alley–zombie themed. The two have to navigate the competition, their parental relationships, and their growing feelings for each other–and make sure they don’t get bit by the zombies.

Look, there are a lot of puns you can make with the title of this book and our current living situation, and I am not above going for the obvious. This book was the perfect escape. Suzanne is hilarious so I knew this book would be funny, and it definitely did not disappoint in the humor department. Nate and Kate are both endearing and adorable, and I related to both of them in different ways. I found their plights to be heartbreaking and I just wanted to see these sweet baby angels succeed and achieve their dreams. The ending is absolute adorable perfection and it made my insides all squishy. It was honestly the perfect read at the perfect time and I was thrilled to get to dive into their world for a brief respite from this real one. I cannot wait to read what Suzanne comes up with next!

Overall Rating: 5 stars (duh)
