Title: Nightchaser
Author: Amanda Bouchet
Sub-genre: Sci-fi
I am really loving this new explosion of both fantasy and sci-fi romance. I love reading fantasy and sci-fi, but the “typical” stories written in the genre don’t usually do it for me. Huge generalization here, but I find even the “strong” female characters in common fantasy/sci-fi to be sexist and patronizing. Also, I want kissing. Always kissing. So I was excited to dive into Nightchaser!
Tess Bailey is the captain of a ship of former prisoners. The group managed to escape their jail and all landed on the same ship, where they quickly bonded and made it their mission to be the Robin Hoods of space. They travel the galaxy and steal vaccines and supplies from the rich and deliver them to the poor, specifically to the orphanage where Tess was abandoned by her uncle. When the crew steal not just vaccines, but an entire lab from the government, a huge bounty is placed on Tess. Shade Ganavan is a bounty hunter, and when Tess walks into his shop looking for someone to help repair her ship, he knows his ship has come in (pun intended). Shade has been saving money to buy back the property a mobster-like casino owner basically stole from him, and with the reward for Tess, he can easily afford his previous land, and more. But the more time Shade spends with Tess, the less willing he is to turn her in. The two fall into some kind of love, but both are keeping major secrets from the other. Of course, in the end, they are able to overcome their trust issues, face the bad guys, and live happily ever after.
This book was a lot of fun to read, and a really good escape read. Now more than ever, escape reads are a huge need for me, so I appreciate that above all else. Really my only complaint about this book is that I wanted the romance to be a little more central to the story than it was. Don’t get me wrong, there is lots of kissing (and one of my favorite first kiss setups, the I have to kiss you to hide you from the bad guys, *swoon*), and some good steamy moments, but the heart of the story is about the external conflict, and not necessarily the romance. But honestly, that’s a small complaint as I found the conflict to be super interesting and the twists and turns constantly kept me on my toes. I already pre-ordered the second one, and I will definitely be checking out Amanda’s other books when I have the time and money to do so (so hopefully, soon!).
