Book Review: Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn

Author: Sarah Kuhn

Sub-genre: Contemporary, Sci-fi

I don’t know why no one informed me of the existence of this book before now (epic fail, you guys). It’s a romance about superheroes and it’s basically everything I could ever want from a book. I loved it so much that when I went to make an online purchase from Ripped Bodice (because they are closing up shop for quarantine and could use our support!), I ordered the next two books in this series.

Evie Tanaka and Aveda Jupiter have been best friends since they were kids. Aveda (real name Annie) has always been Evie’s protector, and has always been the one in the spotlight, while Evie prefers to be in the background. After a demon portal opened in San Francisco, Evie and Annie both discovered they’d gained superpowers. Annie has telekinesis and Evie can create fire with her hands. Annie decides to run with her powers, and creates her alter ego, Aveda Jupiter, SF’s very own superhero. Evie signs on as Aveda’s assistant and basically runs her whole life. Evie doesn’t feel comfortable using her powers since her fire proves to be volatile in the beginning, so she hides it from everyone and exists merely to serve Aveda and take care of her younger sister Beatrice. When Aveda injures herself, Evie is forced to take over as Aveda Jupiter and discovers she is much more than just a background player. Along the way, she also discovers Aveda’s nerdy scientist Nate is actually super hot and she’s super into him. The team is tested, but of course, everything works out in the end and they live happily ever after.

Okay. I loved this book so hard. I don’t really have any complaints, which actually makes this a kind of hard review to write because I thought everything was so perfect. I love this alternate world, I love the idea of a superhero team, I love the dynamic of the female friendships and Evie’s relationship with her sister, and I love all the sexy sex times between Evie and Nate. Seriously, this book is the perfect combination of nerdy comic books and romance and I am so here for it. I’m hoping quarantine is going to give me lots of reading time because I can’t wait to dive into the rest of these books!

Overall Rating: 5 stars

If you want to buy this book, or any other romance books (and you should!), please consider supporting your independent bookstores in this time of economic uncertainty. Ripped Bodice is my favorite, you can support them by clicking here and ordering some amazing romances!
