Sub-genre: Fantasy, retelling

I don’t think you’ll be surprised to hear at this point that I loved this book. I’m a big Kiersten White fan, and I’ve been counting down to this book for a while. So I was uber excited to see it in my Owl Crate in December. Best surprise ever!

This book really takes the King Arthur legend in a brand new direction. Guinevere is skilled in magic, which has been banned from Camelot. Merlin has been exiled, leaving Arthur vulnerable to attacks from other nations–and other magical beings. Merlin has the perfect way to keep Arthur safe in his absence–send in Guinevere to be his wife, and his protector. Except the girl he sends in isn’t Guinevere, it’s in his own daughter, who assumes the Princess’s identity. Guinevere and Arthur together must navigate both political and magical opposition, all while figuring out their true feelings for one another, and facing the evil that comes at them from all directions. Honestly, there were so many fun plot twists, I don’t want to spoil them all.

Despite my deep love for Kiersten White, not all of her books have been immediate hits for me, but this one, I loved from the very first page. It was just the right amount of everything I love. I love a retelling, and this one is close enough to the original to be familiar, but new and creative enough to be intriguing. I love fantasy, but I don’t want to be hit over the head with world-building, and this book strikes the perfect balance. Obviously I love a love story, and this one has more than one, and plants seeds for some future love plot twists that I can’t wait to see play out. I just truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and honestly, what more is there to want? I’m so looking forward to seeing where this series goes!
